Versace, first love.

Febbraio 1994.

February 1994. We are in Milan: in “Milano da bere”, that of the early nineties, where everything seemed possible, where the fashion week was still seen as a big party, and without that spirit that characterizes today’s fast-paced, where the top supermodels were true. On the streets of the city stood out only them, the posters of the greatest designers who had hired for their various campaigns Claudia, Naomi, Christy, Linda and even a wren named Kate. The little doe-eyed girl, just turned twenty, and physically (for the times) anorexic, after a night of dancing between the notes of Plastic, arrived on time to make up, edited by Francois Nars,of the designer who will always be considered the father of top: Gianni Versace. In the backstage, you can see stands of mini dresses pink, yellow, then gold, a lot of gold that will be the symbolic color of the season to come. Just a few minutes and the show begins: more minutes pass, the more the movements of the brush make up artist on the faces of the models are fast, the seamstresses made final changes to the length of the dresses, the designer and the famous sister stare with anxious eyes of their creations: they know already, they will receive the ovation of the press. In a few seconds falls down the silence:the security guys have just removed the protective plastic from the runway, when the lights are lowered and “Temple Of Love” intones his notes. A series of pictures of the maison is projected on the giant screen above the runway. The curtain rises and is the time of Nadja Auremann, then Claudia, then the future Madame Sarkozy makes his triumphal entry, and then a succession of famous names…
At that time I was little more than a child, but Gianni Versace and his unique style, that style (like Diana Vreeland would say) makes you feel immediately younger and happier , had conquered me, and even if I was a fashion-naive,  I was attracted to all that kaleidoscope colors. Since then, I began an obsessive quest for everything that was from Versace. “I studied” his campaign photo, signed by his friend Richard Avedon, never predictable, always in the forefront, pushing beyond where no one of the other fellow had dared to go. He was a true subversive, a cultural phenomenon: he wanted to bring passion for art even in fashion (see the dress “Marilyn”or the dress “Comma”), but at the same time he wanted to be a fashion designer “of the people”, the first in the history of fashion who realized the profitability  of a” scandalous communication “,the power of the artistic nude women and men in advertising campaigns, and  he turned the simple fashion show, in a real show. He, the revolutionary designer, the designer of “the people”, the one of the redemption of all the South, but who preferred an art exhibition or a show at the theater, rather than a soiree.
And that’s what his boundless love for the theater, led him to collaborate with the most renowned choreographers, including Maurice Bejart, creating costumes for the dancers and actors.
But Versace, is not only that: it is also experimentation  and fashion projected into the future, is the juxtaposition of contrasting fabrics and materials together. The skin and silk, metal mesh (also called sorazza) and rubber, making the “game of the wrong turn” and the art of draping: all, strictly advanced.
A real genius, who as a boy had declared love for the Greeks, and chose as the symbol of the house, the face of Medusa. The fate would somehow repay him for this devotion to the Iliad and Odyssey, putting it to Olympus of Fashion, where he reigned with the supreme gods of antiquity. And where he is now watching us with a sly eye, along with Madame Coco , Monsieur Saint Laurent, Mr. Worth, the eccentric Schiaparelli and the precise Poiret.
