the make-up: itstory.

The make up has very ancient roots: 6000 years ago the Ancient Egyptians used the Kohl, a dark powder made by the combustion of almonds and minerals, to be applied around the eyes with a stick, giving to the eyelids that typical almond-shape (which, besides the decorative one also had a protective function, preventing several infections).
The ancient Romans also used kohl for eyelashes and eyebrows, whislt they dyed their hair with different shades, including blonde and red. Around 1850, during the Victorian Age, the noble fans of pale skin, managed to make it lighter through dangerous mixes of lead and arsenic powder. So, when did the first cosmetic companies come to life? The first to see the light was L’Oreal in 1909, then came  Helena Rubinstein, Max Factor, Avedon and all the others that choosed hollywood stars as testimonial. The trends of ‘900 are well known by everybody, short “masculine” haircuts with very thin eyebrows and scarlet lips of the ’20s, then very pale lips and doe eyes in the ’60s, then hippy looks, flower power, in the ’70s and the punks in the early eighties… the rest is history…

with love, Elena
